Signal Hill Community Info

The community of Signal Hill is one of the larger and younger neighborhoods located in the Southwest quadrant of Calgary. The land on which Signal Hill sits was integrated into the city in 1956 but the community was not developed until 1986.One interesting feature of the neighborhood is that the land was used for training by the Canadian Armed Forces during the First World War, who left large stone identification numbers set into the hillside in the community. Signal Hill is bordered by 17th Avenue to the north, the Sarcee Trail to the east, the Glenmore Trail to the south and 69th Street to the west. The community has its own association and is represented by ward 6 in the Calgary City Council.

 

The community is situated on an elevated plateau which means that residents get spectacular views of the Elbow River Valley and the Rocky mountains. There is plenty of wide, green space to enjoy making it the perfect location in which to raise a family. Signal Hill is also ideally placed for access to other recreational areas of the city including the Optimist Athletic Park, the Weaselhead Flats Hiking Trails and North Glenmore Park. The Sarcee Trail that borders the community is easily accessible and provides quick access to the Downtown area of the city for those that need to commute for work. The community has many shopping areas on its doorstep such as the Westhills Towne Center, Westmarket Square and its own Signal Hill Center. As well as a library, the community association has its own building for residents to use. It comes with facilities such as tennis courts, playing fields and an outdoor skating rink. Various sports programs, Guides, Scouts and the Boys & Girls Club are also available to the younger members of the community. There are currently no schools in Signal Hill itself but students can attend some excellent schools in the neighboring communities of Glamorgan and Glenbrook.
